With American entry into the war, food required to fuel the armed forces created a need for rationing on the home-front. The poster highlights the benefit of maintaining a garden as a way to preserve one’s food rations for more limited items like meat. The artwork shows the delicious abundance a Victory Garden can yield. The concept of food as a weapon was carried through in many similarly themed posters that demonstrated the conservation of home-grown and canned foods, the repurposing of leftovers, or the benefits of healthy eating.

The U.S. Government encouraged home canning of vegetables and fruits and provided information to help the public. Home-canned goods were exempt from rationing because they provided relief from farmer produce intended for the military.

Hubert Morely (1888-1951) was an American illustrator who served in WWI before his formal education in fine art. He dedicated the WWII years of his life to creating posters for the US Government.

This is an Original Vintage Poster; it is not a reproduction. This poster is conservation mounted, linen backed, and in excellent condition.
